There is something different about our ever changing world. I don't know if any of you know this, or if you would even care.. but it has been in my thoughts lately.

Do you believe that we, (humans) could be the only life in existence? Or are we just a small population too far to find other life forms out there in the universe.

That thought has come to my mind many times within the last couple years.

The closest galaxy in the universe to us that happens to be very similar to ours, the Andromeda Galaxy. There is a huge possibility that within the Andromeda Galaxy, there could actually be a planet similar to Earth. This possible Earth like planet, could also have possible life forms on it. Could be primordial life, or intelligent life like the humans on this planet.

You know what? There could actually be more than one planet, maybe dozens. All we have to do is search for them. But there is a problem with all this. There is no way we could know if this is true or not. Why? Because we're in a point of our existence where technology hasn't evolved enough for us to search vast distances.

The Andromeda Galaxy is over 2 million light years away from us. And when we see the galaxy through our primitive telescopes, we're seeing it as it was 2 million years ago. So if there was a way for us to see into the galaxy and find the planets, who knows what we would find. Whatever we see wont be like they are today.

That is where my site banner comes in. THE DRAKE EQUATION. The true question is, is there a way to estimate the number of technologically advanced civilizations that might exist in our Galaxy? Actually, yes, there is. It was created by Dr. Frank Drake. And he conceived a means to mathematically estimate the number of worlds that might harbor beings with technology sufficient enough to communicate across the vast gulfs of interstellar space.

  • N = The number of communicative civilizations
  • R* = The rate of formation of suitable stars (stars such as our Sun)
  • fp = The fraction of those stars with planets. (Current evidence indicates that planetary systems may be common for stars like the Sun.)
  • ne = The number of Earth-like worlds per planetary system
  • fl = The fraction of those Earth-like planets where life actually develops
  • fi = The fraction of life sites where intelligence develops
  • fc = The fraction of communicative planets (those on which electromagnetic communications technology develops)
  • L = The "lifetime" of communicating civilizations

This estimates about 10,000 communicative civilizations in the Milky Way alone. Imagine another galaxy, say Andromeda?
